Course Description:

During this comprehensive training you will gain understanding of historical, physiological, and the therapeutic effects and benefits of hot stone massage. The indications and contraindications for hot stone massage as well as the effects of heat and cold therapy will be reviewed and discussed. By the end of the workshop you will be familiar with the handling of stones, cleaning protocols, methods for incorporating hot stonework into your regular massage sessions for spot treatment, as well as learning a full body hot stone routine that you can offer as an additional, unique treatment option. Participants will also learn how to incorporate the use of essential oils into a hot stone routine for added benefit if desired. This treatment modality not only adds enrichment to your massage sessions but also provides benefits to you as a manual therapist by saving wear and tear on your hands. The warmth and heat of the hot stones can help soften fascia, relax tight muscles, and deeply relax the client. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated: deep, broad, specific, and stationary placement. There will be lecture, demonstration, and a hands-on exchange. This modality adds variety to your menu of services and is a client favorite.

Please register early as this class requires you to purchase materials needed in advance.

Participants are asked to bring:

  • Set of linens, including blanket and face cradle cover
  • Five (5) thin hand towels, and two (2) wash cloths
  • Water-dispersible massage oil (Pure Pro Ultra) or fractionated coconut oil
  • One (1) slotted spoon to retrieve hot stones, if using a unit with water
  • One (1) set of Basalt stones (containing six (6) 3-4 in large stones, six (6) 2-3 in medium stones, four (4) 1-2 in small stones, and (optional) eight (8) toe stones
    • 18-30 stones are recommended to achieve full body sessions allowing for placement and consistent heat
  • Professional hot stone warmer heating unit, 6-18 quarts
