Ayurveda is a traditional healing system developed in India at least 5,000 years ago. From this tradition, we have adopted the term chakra, a Sanskrit word often translated as “wheel.” Chakras are described as several centers of energy within the human body. By engaging with this flow of energy and using several massage techniques, massage therapists can help clients work toward chakra energy balancing for healing and enhanced well-being.
HICI Go is an online center that hosts a diverse catalog of health and beauty courses online for people in Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando, or anywhere else in the U.S. With the goal of expanding the skills of massage therapists and others interested in the field, HICI Go offers many types of massage courses, including chakra massage.
Chakras are elements of a complex Ayurvedic system that describes the makeup of the physical and energetic bodies and are understood as an energetic system. Correspondences have been mapped between chakras, organs, and nerves. When the energy system is balanced, the chakras allow life force energy, called variously prana, chi, and shakti, to flow in ways that positively affect health. This flow is described as starting in chakras at the base of the spine and moving through at least seven chakras past the crown of the head. Here is a brief outline of the most commonly identified chakras:
The first chakra sits at the sacrum, or where the base of the spine connects to the pelvis. It is foundational and associated with stability, mobility, courage, and security.
The second chakra is centered beneath the belly button in the pelvic area and abdomen. Sexual energy, the microbiome, creativity, pleasure, and emotions are associated with this chakra.
The third chakra is in the stomach area, below the ribs. Digestion of food and information is associated with this chakra. It is a center of personal power and transformation.
The fourth chakra is in the center of the chest, near the heart. This chakra is associated with compassion, forgiveness, love, and relationships.
The fifth chakra is in the throat. It is associated with authenticity, communication, and speaking personal truths.
The sixth chakra is located between the eyes. This area is associated with intuition and spiritual awareness. This chakra is also connected to abilities around making decisions.
The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head. Connecting with the source of energy and all life, this chakra is associated with higher awareness, collective consciousness, and individual life purpose.
Chakra massage is one way to encourage energy balancing along the flow path of these chakra energy centers. The massage therapist uses knowledge of the chakras and seeks to determine whether there are any blockages, imbalances, or dysfunctions affecting the client. Through the recognition of physical patterns and listening to intuition, the therapist tunes into the energetic body of the client, as well as performing one or more massage techniques, including:
Energy-balancing chakra massage can help clients feel better physically, as well as treat painful areas in the body. This chakra therapy can also influence emotional health. When energy is more balanced between the chakras, clients have more reserves to call upon. Imbalances are related to blockages, where the life energy is unable to flow easily.
Clients may find it difficult to let go of certain experiences or feelings surrounding those experiences. Chakra massage techniques can assist clients in a process of letting go, or integration. Helping clients gain relief from stress, chakra massage can also enhance mental sharpness and focus, and the ability to self-calm during difficult emotional states.
