Why Choose Sugaring for Hair Removal?

People want to remove hair for a variety of reasons. And whatever practice is used, including shaving, waxing, depilatories, electrolysis, or sugaring, the method affects the way skin looks and feels. HICI Go offers skincare courses that help both beauty practitioners and enthusiasts develop knowledge and techniques that enhance skin health and appearance. Sugaring for hair removal is considered less irritating to the skin than waxing.

Sugaring Techniques and Methods

Similarly to waxing, sugaring is a hair removal technique that uses a thick, sticky, paste-like substance to pull unwanted hair out. While beeswax is a natural product created by bees, other waxes are manufactured from a variety of materials that form a solid at room temperature and become liquid when heated. After heating, wax is applied to the skin while still warm. Paper or cloth strips are placed on top of the wax, and after it completely cools, adhering to both the skin and hair, the wax is pulled off using the strips.

The paste used in sugaring can be made from all-natural ingredients: sugar, water, and lemon. These ingredients are heated to form a candy-like texture, which is completely cooled before being applied to the skin for hair removal. The sugaring paste does not adhere to the skin, but only to the hair. After the sugaring paste dries, the practitioner uses a gloved hand to gather up the paste, which also pulls out the hair.

One of the main differences between waxing and sugaring is the temperature of the substance placed on the skin. If wax isn’t allowed to cool enough it can burn the skin, while sugaring uses completely cooled material. Another important difference lies in the technique used for application. Wax is applied in the same direction as the hair growth. With sugaring, the paste is applied in the opposite direction as hair growth, which may lead to a more complete removal of hair from the follicle. Like waxing, sugaring can be used on the face, underarms, arms, legs, back, and groin regions.

What Are the Benefits of Sugaring?

It may come down to client preference as to whether they want to remove unwanted hair by waxing or sugaring. The hair usually grows back in about the same amount of time. And subsequent hair growth is often softer and finer with both practices. However, there is also a light exfoliation, or removal of dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin, with sugaring. This is also thought to improve the appearance of the skin.

Many clients prefer to use all-natural ingredients on their skin, and this is another benefit of sugaring. Gaining the skills and knowledge to practice this hair removal process is a bonus for esthetician continuing education, as this in-demand service will likely bring more clients. Those whose skin reacts after waxing may well choose to try sugaring, and this can help maintain your client base.
