Course Description:

Participants will learn techniques to add to their skill sets as massage therapists and sports massage therapists.

Topics will include (but are not limited to):

  • Gua Sha (Graston, muscle scaping) ia a traditional Chinese healing method that uses a smooth-edged tool to help treat chronic pain.
  • Basics of Sports Massage such as Pre, Post and Intra Event Sports Massage as well as Sports Maintenance Massage. Also included will be the origin of sports massage, effects of sports massage to the client, and benefits and contraindications of Sports Massage.
  • Gua Sha (Graston, muscle scraping) techniques on upper and lower body will also be taught. Titanium gua sha (graston tool will be provided).
  • Proper foam rolling techniques, proper use of lacrosse balls to break up adhesions, and use of other tools for the therapist including percussion tools.
  • An introduction to Active Isolated Stretching (to use on clients and for self-care).

These skills are designed to give the therapist added skills to use on themselves for self care and for their clients.

Participants are asked to bring: Paper towels, a hand towel, a set of linens, hand sanitizer, and oil, gel, lotion or cream. Loose clothing and shorts are recommended, as class will be very participative.

About the Instructor:

Jim Earley, LMT, Board Certified, has been a massage therapist for the past 29 years and has been an instructor for the past 10 years.

Jim is a Sports Massage Specialist, who works with and has worked with many athletes, from the weekend warrior to the professional athlete. Jim was Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps’ first massage therapist and traveled with him for 4 years. He also works with 18 colleges and universities and many high school and club athletes.

Jim has been an instructor for the past 10 years and teaches classes in Cupping (1,2 and 3), Sports Stretching (Active Isolated and PNF), Pin and Release, and more.
